SaverLife: Helping microentrepreneurs build financial security through personalized resources and savings tools

SaverLife is a nonprofit with 650,000+ members that uses technology to improve the financial health of microentrepreneurs and people living on low-to-moderate incomes.

How SaverLife supports small businesses in the United States

  • Many microentrepreneurs in the U.S. operate at the intersection of personal and business finances, often without recognizing themselves as small business owners. This overlap can limit their access to resources specifically designed for entrepreneurs.
  • SaverLife, a national nonprofit and financial advocacy organization, uses technology to help people build financial security and works toward a more inclusive economic system. The platform rewards members for saving, while also providing personalized content and financial guidance to support long-term behavior change.
  • In 2022, SaverLife launched a pilot initiative targeting U.S. microentrepreneurs to better understand their financial challenges and aspirations. The campaign offered savings challenges, cash rewards, and personalized content focused on financial goals. Within ten weeks, over 9,000 microentrepreneurs joined the SaverLife community, and the organization was able to conduct deeper research on the financial hurdles faced by self-employed individuals. The pilot informed SaverLife’s continued expansion of savings engagement, micro-grants, and technology-enabled tools designed specifically for microentrepreneurs navigating volatile economic conditions.

Program overview

Our work together

  • With support from Mastercard Strive USA, SaverLife expanded its 2022 pilot to reach more microentrepreneurs across the U.S. The initiative combined targeted digital outreach, applied research, savings challenges, and micro-grants to reinforce consistent savings habits among self-employed individuals.
  • SaverLife distributed micro-grants to 248 microentrepreneurs, with more than 90% maintaining steady savings behavior.
  • SaverLife also launched an AI-powered Financial Navigator, expanding its ability to deliver personalized financial guidance at scale. Data collected through the program surfaced critical trends — including rising tax preparation costs and shrinking refunds — which now inform SaverLife’s evolving product roadmap

By the numbers

During the grant period, SaverLife:

  • Added 6,000+ new microentrepreneur members, connecting them to timely, relevant resources and support.
  • Connected over 60,000 microentrepreneur members to resources and savings challenges.
  • Distributed $26,000+ in micro-grants to over 500 microentrepreneurs.

The savings challenge saw a 51% increase in participants saving (rising from 57% to 86%), and 90% of the microentrepreneur cohort continued to contribute to savings one year after their initial 2024 intervention.
